Kosovo* secures additional EUR 11 million for wastewater treatment plant

The Municipality of Gjilan/Gnjilane in Kosovo* has secured another EUR 11 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for a wastewater treatment plant. With the loan, the total amount approved for the project is EUR 24.1 million.

The investment will improve wastewater management and provide affordable access to water and wastewater services for more than 90,000 people in the municipality, according to the EIB’s press release.

It will also reduce the pollution of local water, including the risk of trans-border water contamination, the bank said.

The project envisages the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and related sewerage network, and the revitalization of key infrastructure in the environmental protection sector.

EBRD approved EUR 10 million for the project

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved EUR 10 million for the project by signing an agreement last year with Regional Water Company Hidromorava.

WBIF will provide a EUR 3.1 million EU grant

In addition, the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) will provide a EUR 3.1 million EU grant for the project preparation and implementation.

A project for Mitrovica is going to be signed later this year

The investment comes under the EIB’s Economic Resilience Initiative, which aims to improve vital infrastructure in the Western Balkans and foster social and economic progress in the region.

Besnik Beslimi, outgoing Minister of Finance and Transfers of the Republic of Kosovo*, said the government intends to finance the transformation of the wastewater sector in the medium term.

“We are keen on financing wastewater projects with EIB as a partner that has a long track record and reputation for financing water projects. The Gjilan/Gnjilane project and the project for Mitrovica that is going to be signed later this year are in accordance with our Water Strategy,” he said.
