Vattenfall President and CEO Magnus Hall has been appointed new president of Eurelectric for the next two years, according to press releases from the Sweden-based energy company and the pan-European electricity sector association.

Eurelectric, the European industry association for the electricity sector, represents over 3,500 companies in more than 30 European countries in power generation, distribution and supply.

The priorities of Hall’s two-year mandate will be to continue the efforts of the electricity industry in becoming carbon-neutral by 2045 and leading a timely energy transition. Under his presidency, Eurelectric will call upon new EU policy leaders to enable widespread electrification, while ensuring a fair and inclusive transition.

Vattenfall has the strategic ambition to make fossil-free living possible within one generation and 75% of its electricity production is already fossil free. Against this background, it has become a pioneer helping other sectors become carbon-free through electrification. The utility is notably in partnerships with industry developing the world’s first fossil free steel and CO2-neutral cement, Eurelectric said.

“Electrification is the key to changing Europe towards a fossil free future. My prime objective as President of Eurelectric is to continue the cooperation with decision makers and industry to increase the pace of electrification in the transport, heating and industrial sectors,” says Hall.

According to Hall, carbon-neutral electricity can help lead the transition in the energy industry and other sectors. This requires further investments in renewable electricity generation, as well as efficient electricity distribution, he said, adding “We also need to help citizens change towards a fossil free life.”

During his mandate, Magnus Hall will be supported by Patrick O’Doherty, CEO of Irish utility ESB, and by Leonhard Birnbaum, member of the board of management of Germany’s E.On SE, as vice-presidents.

Magnus Hall takes over from Francesco Starace, CEO of Italy’s Enel, who has headed Eurelectric as president for the last two years.
