Today’s World Water Day (WWD) campaign The answer is in nature suggests that by using solutions already existing in nature we can reduce floods, droughts and water pollution.

The theme for World Water Day 2018 is Nature of Water exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century. Traditionally, WWD event has a goal to recognize the importance of clean, fresh water in people’s lives and to advocate for sustainable water resource laws and practices throughout the world.

According to the UN report, damaged ecosystems affect the quantity and quality of water available for human consumption. Today, 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home which affects their health, education and livelihoods.

More than two million tonnes of waste is thrown into streams, rivers and lakes every day, and if the trend continues until 2025, the need for fresh water will exceed the currently available resources.

The event was first established by the United Nations on March 22, 1992, and since 1993 has been held every year. Millions of people all around the world celebrate the day with water-themed activities, performances and educational events.

Every drop of water is on an endless journey: UN – Water
