Trebinje gets a renewed wastewater treatment plant

In about 300 days the wastewater treatment plant in Trebinje, which has been operating for 38 years, will be modernized and its lifespan extended for 20 years. The project total cost is EUR 1.6 million, and the money is provided through the project “Water supply and sewage of the Republica Srpska” and donation of the Swedish Agency for International Development and Cooperation (SIDA).

The agreement on the revitalization of the wastewater treatment plant was signed by the Mayor of Trebinje Luka Petrović and Slaviša Đurić, a representative of the contractor, the German-Greek consortium“Pfeiffer-Karkanias”.

Mayor Petrović said that works will be completed within 305 days as written in the contract.

“The goal is that finally, after thirty-eight years of using the existing plant, Trebinje receives revitalized equipment for the next twenty years,” the Mayor said.

Marie Bergstrom of SIDA agency, pointed out that Sweden wants to help BiH on its way to membership in the European Union through similar support projects.

“Also, it is important for us to protect the environment and reduce the effects of climate change, as this is one of the main priorities of the Swedish government. After this project, Trebinje will have a clean environment and a clean river,” Bergstrom added.

Slaviša Đurić, a representative of the “Pfeiffer-Karkanias” consortium, said that they realized large and significant projects. He noted that consortium have recently completed the wastewater treatment plant in Bihać, one of the first in BiH to obtain an exploitation permit.

The project “Water and Sewerage in the Republic of Srpska” is financed by the European Investment Bank, and is implemented by the Government of RS with the cooperation of municipalities. In more than thirty municipalities reconstruction and construction of water supply and sewage infrastructure is in progress.

Republika Srpska is interested in construction of a wastewater treatment plants. At the beginning of this year, the RS delegation with ministers and representatives of the municipalities visited Velenje in Slovenia and the plant Grmov Vrh.
