The town of Devnya, in the northeast of Bulgaria, has undertaken steps to prepare ground for construction of what would be the largest solar plant in Bulgaria. The 180 MW plant will be built by Bulgarian company 4B Solar, the local authorities announced.

The project is worth over EUR 100 million which, according to the local authorities, would be secured by 4B Solar, a local company founded in May in Varna, the SeeNews portal reported.

The plant will be built in three phases and should be completed by the end of 2022.

4B Solar will also build a substation to connect the plant with the local grid. By the end of 2018, it will build a 110 KV/20 KV substation with a capacity of 5 MW, which should increase to 65 MW by December 2020 and to 110 MW by the end of 2022.

The local authorities said that they have given preliminary permits for land conversion for the site where the plant is to be built, the PV Magazine portal reported.

The portal added that it is not clear if the project will be supported by the Bulgarian government.

It added that the development of large-scale solar systems has been put on hold in Bulgaria after the feed-in tariffs scheme stooped for new projects in 2013. In 2016, only 154 kW of new PV systems were connected to the grid in Bulgaria.
