The project for improvement of water supply in Tirana has passed concept review and is pending final review, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced.
Target board date is November 15, 2017, the EBRD said.
The project aims to assist Tirana’s water and wastewater utility company, Ujesjelles Kanalizime Tirana (UKT), in providing a more resilient water system.
The objective is to provide a 24 hour water supply by 2021 and to reduce the company’s operational costs by supplying water by gravity versus the high cost of pumping groundwater.
EBRD plans to support the project with a loan of up to EUR 30 million in two tranches.
The first tranche of up to EUR 15 million will be used for extension of the capacity of the Bovilla Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and construction of a new water pipeline that will transfer water from Bovilla WTP to the north western part of the City of Tirana by gravity.
The proceeds of the second tranche of up to EUR 15 million would be determined at a later stage once a study on UKT’s Strategic Water Resources is completed.
The study will determine the most cost-efficient and economically viable investment to further address Tirana’s water shortage, assessing both demand-side and supply-side strategic options.
Total value of the project is estimated at EUR 34 million.
