More than EUR 26 million has been invested in improving energy efficiency of 50 public buildings in Montenegro, according to the Montenegrin Ministry of Economy.

The Montenegro Energy Efficiency Programme (MEEP), which started in 2009, funded the adaptation of 11 public health institutions, eight educational facilities and one campus, worth a total of EUR 7,6 million. Last year the technical thermal insulation works were completed at the health centers in Nikšić, Kolašin, Andrijevica and Petnjica, worth a total of EUR 121,148. Construction works on those centers and Murino health center will continue this year.

Through implementation of the first and second stages of the Energy Efficiency Programme in Public Buildings (EEPPB), which kicked off in 2012, energy efficiency measures were implemented at a total of 28 elementary and high schools, one campus and preschool facility. The total worth of the projects was EUR 18.7 million.

The second stage of that programme will be finished by the end of 2020. By then works shall be completed on the reconstruction and adaptation of more schools, “Grabovac” home for the elderly and “Komanski most” Institute, as well as the national parliament and presidential residence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Justice and the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office.

In 2017 energy efficiency measures will be implemented through reconstruction and adaptation of 10 buildings – four educational and six health care facilities. Value of the works planned for this year is over EUR 4.5 million.

Implementation of energy efficiency measures through these two programmes included installing thermal insulation on the facades, thermal and hydro insulation of roofs, recovery or construction of heating systems, replacement of boiler room equipment, installation of thermostatic and balancing valves and replacement of light bulbs.

By applying those measures, adapted objects received an energy upgrade and were made more comfortable, according to the Ministry of Economy press release.

EEPPB project is funded from a EUR 31.5 million credit and a EUR 4.7 million donation provided by the German Development Bank KfW. The MEEP project is funded from a credit of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), which is worth EUR 11.5 million.
